Overview

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is expected to win the 2009 legislative election, and the presidency will pass smoothly from Festus Mogae to Ian Khama in early 2008. Investment in the mining sector and robust activity in the services sector will drive real GDP growth of 4.4% in national accounts year 2008/09 (July-June), rising marginally, to 4.7%, in 2009/10 as infrastructure spending picks up. Improvements in food availability and the edging-down of South African inflation will help average annual inflation to move downwards from 6.8% in 2008 to 5.8% in 2009. The pula is expected to depreciate slightly in line with downward trends in the rand, from an average of P6.46:US$1 in 2008 to P6.77:US$1 in 2009. The current-account surplus is expected to narrow from 16.7% of GDP in 2008 to 15.5% of GDP in 2009 as transfers from the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) decline.
