The regime of the president, Blaise Compaore, and his ruling party, Congres pour la democratie et le progres (CDP), will retain its political hegemony, dominating the National Assembly and the government. However, damaging factional splits and labour unrest over living standards have shaken the regime's confidence and increased the likelihood that Mr Compaore will seek new political alliances to support a re-election bid in 2010. Despite sporadic efforts to unite, the opposition remains ineffective and has failed to capitalise on public discontent. Rising mining, cotton and agricultural output will drive strong real GDP growth of 5.8% in 2010 and 6.2% in 2011. Inflation is forecast to rise to an average of 5.8% in 2010 and 5.3% in 2011, in line with higher domestic consumption. The current-account deficit is forecast to widen from an estimated 5.2% of GDP in 2009 to 5.5% of GDP in 2010 and 5.9% of GDP in 2011. |
