The centre-right New Democracy (ND) government remained the largest party, after the September 16th general election, but with a diminished majority. The general government deficit, which is estimated to have fallen below the euro area ceiling of 3% of GDP in 2006, should gradually fall further over 2007-09. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that GDP growth will slow from 4.3% in 2006, to 3.8% in 2007, 3% in 2008 and 2.6% in 2009. Inflation (EU harmonised measure) is projected to ease from 3.3% in 2006 to 2.6% in 2007, 2.5% in 2008 and 2.4% in 2009. The current-account deficit will exceed 10% of GDP in 2007 and 2008, but should fall moderately in 2009. |
