The president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has the backing of Golkar, the largest party in the House of People's Representatives (DPR, the legislature), but his coalition will come under strain as the 2009 parliamentary and presidential elections approach and pressure builds within Golkar to mount a challenge for the presidency. There is disillusionment with the disjointed progress of economic reform and the government's failure to create jobs. A new investment law has been passed, but proposed changes to tax and labour laws have repeatedly stalled or been diluted. A slowdown in the global economy will slow Indonesia's real GDP growth to 6.1% in 2008, despite strong domestic demand. In 2009 GDP growth is expected to decelerate further, to 5.7% |
